Sports Report: Rugby - Year 9 vs. Charles Darwin

On Wednesday 21 March, the Year 9 rugby squad took on Charles Darwin School and played a great game to win the match 55 - 10.

The game kicked off and Hayesbrook were off to a good start, passing it through the hands and stretching the opponents. Our team gained several metres and found themselves inches from the try line within the first minute of the game. Louis Pascal-Savage scored the first try, resulting from some good possession and tackling from the forwards. Our defence held strong, with some good tackling from Finley Collins, Ben Sellors and George Wells, creating a platform for us to then go on and play some more attractive rugby and scoring several tries before half time. At the half-time whistle, Hayesbrook were in the lead by 5 tries.

The second half was a battle to begin with, with both teams tackling and rucking aggressively for the ball. James Fitch, Joe Rowe and Owen Harrington were instrumental in winning the ball for Hayesbrook and getting in some good turnovers. Jamie and Finley made many metres through their hard and fast running, setting up tries for Owen and Billy Aldred. Good pressure from the back line caused problems for our opponents, as a handling error allowed Ben to put down an easy try.

The Charles Darwin team had many good runners who looked to pass through Hayesbrook’s defence, however they were soon met by some good tackles from Joe, Jamie and a brilliant try-saving tackle from Jack Stone. Rucking from Sam Donno on only his second ever rugby game allowed Hayesbrook to get on the front foot. In the last seconds of the game, Jamie made a break and looked set to score but was stopped metres from the line. Amazing rucking from Ben Sellors and Mat Bartman allowed Owen Harrington to get a clean pass away to Ben Hermitage, who stepped three defenders and reached over the line to get his well-deserved try.

Hayesbrook won the match, with the final score 55 – 10.
