Sports Report: Tennis - Year 10 vs. Bethany School

The Hayesbrook Year 10 team played their last tennis fixture of the season on Thursday 14 May and were away to Bethany School.

We finally arrived at 4.15pm and got straight onto the astro courts. Ben and Jamie battled well together against their 1’s and 2’s, who were both a year older than them, but they eventually lost 6-3. David and James had had a better result and won their doubles match 6-3, to make the tie 1-1 on rubbers.

Into the singles and Ben did really well to get 2 games, but lost the set 6-2. Jamie also did well, but lost 6-2 against their number 2 seed. So it was over to James and David to save the tie. At this point, Hayesbrook were still in with a chance of qualifying for the finals but needed both boys to win their matches.

James looked dead and buried at 5-1 down, but somehow managed to bring it back to 5-5, showing great grit and determination, with some epic rallies. He just missed out, losing 7-5. David, on the other hand, surged into a late lead and was serving for the match at 6-5. However, he got broken and it went to a deciding tie break. In another classic game, David just fell short, losing the tie-break 7-5.

A great effort from the whole team and they have been rewarded with a 'lucky loser' place in the finals in June! Jamie and Ben will look forward to next year’s event, when they will be playing against players their own age!
