Sports Report: Rugby - Year 9 vs. Bennett Memorial

Jamie Tutt of 9E provides another great match report from last week's Year 9 Rugby match against rivals Bennett Memorial School.

The whistle sounded and the game started. Hayesbrook kicked to Bennett and their waves of attack started, however the Hayesbrook defence held strong. Great rucking from Ben Sellors allowed Hayesbrook to turn the ball over and get on to the front foot. James Fitch and George Wells carried up through the middle gaining Hayesbrook ground. Hayesbrook had the momentum and spread the ball out wide. However Hayesbrook were sadly pushed into touch. After a well worked line-out and good hands Bennett pushed the ball out wide and scored in the corner.

Hayesbrook then kicked off to Bennett and after a few more phases, Bennett gave away a penalty. Jamie Tutt kicked for touch and Hayesbrook won the resulting line out. From the line out more metres were gained up through the middle by Hayesbrook’s scrum half Owen Harrington. A few more phases passed and Hayesbrook got their best opportunity of the match. The ball found itself in the hand of James Fitch who bundled his way over from Hayesbrook’s first try of the game. Jamie Tutt then slotted the conversion to make it 7-5 to Hayesbrook at Half time.

The Second half started and safe hands from Joe Rowe allowed Hayesbrook to attack. Unfortunately a handling error allowed Bennett to score and get back into the lead. This try was quickly followed up by another one. A hat-trick of tries could have been scored in the second Half for Bennett, however some great cover defence form Jack Stone and Ben Sellors kept Bennett out from scoring again. Hayesbrook were camped near their own try line however a 'show and go' from Jamie Tutt allowed Hayesbrook to gain ground, the ball was then offloaded to Sam Dunno who then got Hayesbrook up to the 22 metre line. Owen Harington then went himself and looked set to score however good defence from Bennett wrestled him into touch. Soon after the final whistle sounded and the Final score was Hayesbrook 7 – Bennett 19. An excellent effort from the boys who finish their season with a final tournament next week at Bennett.
