GCSE Students Soak Up Spanish Culture in Madrid

A group of Year 11s visited Madrid to put their speaking skills to the test and enjoy an authentic cultural experience in the Spanish capital.

On our first evening we devoured an array of traditional tapas dishes and soaked up the atmosphere in the centre of the city. Our second day took us on a tour of 18th and 19th century Spanish art at the world famous Prado museum, before a browse through the Rastro - Europe’s largest street market. We finished the warm, autumn Sunday as any right-thinking Madrileño would, with a picnic in the Retiro park. On our third day, we explored the influential works of Dali and Picasso at the Reina Sofia and spent the afternoon at the Santiago Bernabeu, home to the mighty Real Madrid FC. The students headed off for some paella in groups to celebrate the last night of the trip. On our fourth and final day, we checked out and hopped on the ‘Teleferico’ cable cars for a panoramic view of the city and crammed in some last minute shopping before heading to the airport.

Miss Chandler, spanish teacher and trip leader, commented: "The students were an absolute pleasure to accompany to Madrid. They relished every opportunity to practise their language skills, were polite, enthusiastic and absorbed Spanish culture with a real openness that filled me with pride. I am optimistic that such an authentic experience will serve them well as they enter the final months of their Spanish and Art GCSE studies.’’
