Sports report: Tennis - Year 8 vs. Sutton Valence
In perfect tennis-playing conditions, the Year 8 tennis team start their season with a thrilling 7-6 win over Sutton Valence School.
In the singles matches, Ollie Smith and Tom Noble were up against two very good players. Ollie battled well but lost 6-1 and Tom, in a closer match, narrowly lost 6-4. Ben Hermitage won an excellent match 7-6 on a tie-break and Jamie Tutt powered through to win 6-4. An excellent achievement, considering Jamie and Ben have only recently joined the tennis club.
Then it was time for the doubles matches. Ollie and Tom were up against the top seeds from Sutton Valence and with some close line calls for both sides, eventually lost 6-2. Ben and Jamie came through their match to win convincingly 6-2.
This meant the fixture was tied at 6 rubbers each, which forced the team to play a championship tie-break to decide the winners. The team chose Ben and Ollie to pair up against Sutton’s top seeds. It was a very close tie-break with some thrilling rallies. Ben and Ollie were match point down and were looking down and out. On this rally Ben managed to produce a fine diving volley to win the point and take the score to 9-9. Ollie then managed to serve out to take the tie-breaker 11-9.
Hayesbrook came out 7-6 winners thanks to winning the tie-breaker. A fantastic achievement from all the students, who were representing the school in tennis for the first time! Well done boys!
