Sports report: Rugby - Year 10 vs. Mascalls / Trinity

The Year 10s rugby team had two matches in two days last week, the first of these was away against Mascalls Academy on Tuesday.

Hayesbrook travelled with a full squad of 15, which comprised of a mixture of Year 9 and 10s. Hayesbrook started the game well and scored their first points of the season, with Luke Macro converting a penalty kick to put the boys 3-0 up. Unfortunately things started to go downhill from there and the team failed to deal with a few of the Mascalls’ quick wingers, who went through to score a couple of tries, which were all converted.

Half time came around, with Hayesbrook still in the game, with the score 14-3 to Mascalls. Soon into the 2nd half, a collision happened involving Charlie Hendricks and one of the Mascalls wingers. What was first thought to be a bleeding nose, turned into a serious head wound! The game had to be abandoned due to the collision, with 2 paramedics, an ambulance and a fire engine all coming to Charlie’s rescue! Charlie was incredibly brave throughout, thankfully made a full recovery and is already looking forward to getting back onto the rugby field. We are trying to organise dates for the game to be rearranged.

The very next day, the same squad (apart from Charlie) travelled to Trinity school for a 1.30pm kick off. Being a player short against a strong Year 10 side took its toll on Hayesbrook’s players, who unfortunately failed to score any points in the game. The teams’ desire and commitment was excellent throughout and special mentions go to Harvey Thatcher, Finlay Garrigan-Twiford and Hasta Rana, who kept the side going through difficult periods of the game. Some of the boys even came back for training after their second match in two days, straight after the game on Wednesday!
