Hayesbrook Student makes Kent Young Chef Awards 2016 Final
On Wednesday 16 November, Josh took part in the ‘Live Cook Off’ final of the Kent Young Chef Award 2016.
Josh did extremely well, but the overall winner for his age group was a young man who had reached the live finals three times previously.
The aim of the competition was to showcase Kent’s best seasonal produce. The young finalists did Kent proud with their mouth-watering and beautifully presented dishes of: Boar burger with brioche bun and beetroot crisps; rack of lamb with fondant potato and carrot puree; pumpkin ravioli; venison steak; and of course Josh's colourful dish consisting of pan fried duck, creamy mash potato, savoy cabbage with bacon lardons and jus.
Richard Phillips, chef and co-proprietor of Thackeray’s, said all the dishes were of a very high standard, and every finalist did very well on the day, especially with the extra pressure of working in a different kitchen with every move under scrutiny. Mr Phillips, who has appeared on Ready, Steady Cook and is a regular chef on ITV's Lorraine, said Josh's dish was “well-balanced with good combinations of flavours”.
The Mayor of Maidstone presented each finalist with their certificate, an exceptional quality chef’s knife and a personalised jacket donated by Continental Chef’s Supplies. He encouraged all the runners-up not to be too disheartened as he told them: "If you are not successful today, you will be tomorrow" - which echoes our school ethos of perseverance and resilience.
