Ruben Lewis (M3)

Congratulations to Hayesbrook Year 9 student Ruben Lewis, who has recently been accepted into The Angling Trust Talent Pathway.

Ruben joined Crowborough District Anglers Association about two years ago and, after a series of successful junior matches, he was put forward to take part in the Angling Trust Talent Pathway, where young people are supported to reach the standards required to fish for their country. Here is his account of his first day:

"My first session at Bitterwell Lakes Bristol started with meeting all the other lads and coaches, Danny Williamson, Terry Smith and Des Shipp, England International and Parkdean Master Match Angler.  Des showed us his set up and how to prepare ground bait using joker.  Although cold, it was dry, and I began to set my peg up using 13m pole for the first time – I thought this might be a challenge but soon got used to the feel of it.  The coaches would come round and assess how I was doing regularly.  Bitterwell is not easy to catch in, but we all managed to catch a few in the end and I was working hard at getting the fish in and off the hook as fast as I could.  Des Shipp was a great coach – now I’ve got to practice all I’ve learnt."

Well done Ruben!
