Hayesbrook Students 'Access All Areas' at CAFC

On Tuesday 8th March 2016, we took 78 lucky Year 7 - 13 students for a 'behind the scenes' tour of Charlton Athletic Football Club's home ground.

We travelled up on a coach that was provided by the club. There was a lot of excitement on the coach with talk of one man and one man only - YAYA SANOGO!  (Unfortunately his night didn’t finish so well!)   When we arrived at Charlton we were met by their wonderful staff who were also our tour guides.  The boys were given a tour of the stadium and the opportunity to go in the players’ entrance and pass by the changing rooms.  The boys then went through the tunnel and were allowed access pitch side, where they were given the opportunity to sit on the ‘home’ bench.  Even though it’s a comfortable place, I’m sure most of the boys wouldn’t want to spend too much time on the subs’ bench!  We were then taken to the directors’ seats where the boys felt very important; they then had the chance to ask questions.

We were informed on the tour that Charlton Athletic are offering adult season tickets for the  2016-17 season in one area of the ground for just £175 for the whole season.  That works out at just £7.61 per game! This means Charlton Athletic remain one of the most affordable professional clubs to watch in London.

When the tour was over, some of the boys visited the club shop and others chose the more traditional football-style event of visiting the burger van!  We then entered the stadium and the boys were in good voice ahead of a relegation six pointer match.  18 lucky students from our school were selected to be flag bearers before the game which was an exciting opportunity that not everyone gets to experience.  One Year 7 student made himself very popular amongst the group after being a lucky winner of 12 free pies which, in true Hayesbrook spirit, he shared with his peers and staff.

The game kicked off at 7.45pm; after a dull first half the game came to life in the second half. Unfortunately we weren’t treated to any goals but the biggest cheer was when Yaya Sanogo entered the pitch in the 58th minute. Unfortunately he was sent off in the 94th minute but again this got the boys chanting his name.  After a smooth and enjoyable trip we were late back to Hayesbrook due to an accident on the A21.

May I take this opportunity to thanks the parents for their full support and the students for being a credit to Hayesbrook throughout the visit.
