Year 12 Students Visit University of Brighton

On Wednesday 28 June, a selection of Year 12 pupils had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a sports undergraduate student.

The taster day involved a tour of the University of Brighton campus and undergraduate pathway discussions. The day also included a practical element that tied in with the student's Year 12 Cambridge Technical qualification they are currently studying. The students were given the opportunity to investigate how their bodies respond to exercising in extreme heat. They spent 20 minutes exercising in a 50°C heat chamber, which is similar to the conditions expected in Tokyo at the 2020 Olympic games. Whilst exercising, the students had to take regular readings of their skin temperature, body temperature, heart rate and rate of perceived exertion.

Different methods of recovery were then tested, with some students opting for the ice bath whilst others wore ice vests.  After the results had been collected, the students were asked to present their findings.

We would like to thank the University of Brighton for offering our pupils an inspiring day.
